19th Century Bronze Sculpture of Horse by John Willis Good

Sold
A beautiful 19th Century (made around 1875) bronze sculpture entitled 'The Tired Hunter' by John Willis Good. In good condition with some minor damage to stirrups (can be seen in photos). 'Specializing in animalier and hunting groups, John Willis Good frequently exhibited works at the Royal Academy during the 1870s. The Tired Hunter is an excellent example of Willis Good`s ouevre as a talented sporting portraitist. The identity of the horse represented in this particular portrait has been cleverly executed by the artist in the addition of a fox`s mask on the saddle, indicating this hunter possibly belonged to Fred Gregory, a renowned master of foxhounds during the 1870s' (see C. Payne, Animals in Bronze, Woodbridge, 1986, p. 300).
